A soilstack is the large diameter pipe from the toilet, which is presumably upstairs or you wouldn't see it. I don't know if it's a problem for you, is it?

So a soil stack is just the pipe? we have two manholes in the back yard and I thought giving that the soil stack is on our property one of them would be for the neighbours waste etc?

We have 2 manholes too. One to access the rainwater drains and one for the foulwater drains.

Soil stack is normally a 100mm (4") diameter vertical pipe that takes the waste from the WC and sometimes other sanitary fittings (bath, lavatory basin, etc). Flats often share a soil stack as the bathrooms are normally above one and other and the stacks run throgh the flats or externally vertically. Not so usual for houses to share, but not unheard of.

Only problem with a shared stack would be who is reapsonsible if it needs repairing/replacing (check your deeds) or if you wanted to build say an extension that reuqired relocating it - this may not be so simple if you also have to ensure your neighbours service is maintained.

FYI, newer intallations are normally in plastic, whilst older ones were often in cast iron.
