Help please tax code notice

hi
this morning my partner recieved his tax code notice and the have taken an underpayment amount on the code
it states the following

"you owe us £46.20 tax from a previous tax year - you may remember us telling you about this before. By reducing your tax free amount by £231.00 we expect you to pay 20% on an extra £231 this year"

they dont tell us what year and we cant recall ever being told we owe them on top of that they also have another reduction due to company medical plan that he stopped back in 2005

how do we found out whether he does owe this? can we work out whether he owes this how do we do that before contacting them? is it easy to resolve? ohh i do hate the tax man

thank you for any help/advice offered

Phone up and ask, they will tell you which year it refers to. The medical plan deduction which is not current does seem like one of the errors they are making this year so the underpayment may be as well. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2244201

It could be that the underpayment is due to the inclusion of the medical benefit in this year's or last year's code. If the benefit ceased in 2005, then you simply tell this to the tax office and ask them where the underpayment has come from. If its from the benefit, then it could be cancelled.
Tax person doesn't bite, but nor are they mind readers - if you don't tell them stuff, they can't get your tax right.

Some of them are far from pleasant and are arrogant and overbearing in my experience. If you don't talk to them it's no excuse for them to raise all sorts of tax charges, someone ought to be fined (heavily, as is HMRC wont) or even given the order of the P45 over this mess. Oh sorry they're civil servants aren't they.
The only thing that is constant is change.

I had exactly the same notice sent to me in May last year. I did ring them and was told they would look into it, 2 days later I got a phone call and was told I owed it from the previous year but was given no details only that they would be sending me a new code, after which my weekly tax increased by £35 pounds. I still don't understand why I owed them money because I have been drawing my pension for 3 years now. I will cerainly be watching my new code for 2010/2011 when it comes.

your partner needs to call the tax office, it could be a misunderstanding and if you make the tax office aware it could be resolved in a phonecall, if it is outstanding they will explain why the underpayment has arisen it could be the medical benefit, if it is the medical benefit and he hasnt been in receipt of it for 3 years both the underpayment and medical could be removed when you call.

    give them a call.
