Yes we've used this train from Bournemouth-they've just extended the service-excellent :T but no seat bookings-not a problem we had seats. The earlier you book the better the price it can go up as much as £7 a trip (for the limited search I have done!!) and the more choice of train times you have. There was a variety of times and we were able to travel to London for much less than we would have.
They've now extended the service to south West and I've been looking at combining trips to make journey from Plymouth to London but that's a bit more time consuming and I haven't found the answer yet  My concern is that for the Southwest they use Virgin trains who are nearly always delayed on their journey down here.
For those that prefer a slower method of transport might also consider megabus https://www.megabus.com who also have £1 seats but use a double decker bus. Again used last year and had a fairly comfortable journey with two kids and oh considering the price of £8 return to London.
Both services seem to service University towns and probably rely on a student consumer who are prepared to 'rough' it a bit. (train was a 'normal' carriage and actually seemed to be full of normal commuters who had paid 'full price')0 -
