Wellies - loose or tight? How best to wear them?

I appreciate that this is going to sound like a ridiculous question but....

Before I take my lush new Ugg wellies into the mud please can you tell me how wellies are supposed to fit. The size 2's (yes, really) are snug, the sizes 3's are loose.

Does it matter how they fit or it is personal choice? I see some people having them flapping around but surely if it is dangerous if you trip and it can get annoying. I have found with my Hunters being snug my feet get very, very cold (even with Hunters fleece welly liners) but maybe that will not happen now these are lined with wool.

Any suggestions would be helpful please as I've got to send one pair back (I bought a 2 and a 3 - £44 from M&M Direct. Bargain!!)

  • do they come in 2.5?
i don't know if wellington boots could be considered similar when choosing a size - but being a size 5, the wellies were a bit snug so i went for a size 6. this way i can wear 2 pairs of socks as they can get cold in wellies. if the boots are slipping about in the bigger size - would they be tight and comfy enough when wearing 2 pairs of socks. and if you go for the snug size - would they give after a while of wearing them.

(personally im not fond of uggs - i think they are like slippers you wear outside!)

    I've been Money Tipped!
I think it depends on personal comfort. I presume these boots are sheepskin lined? with non lined wellies I always do the barefoot test, for that time it rains and you have to run outside with barefeet in boots, and you don't want to sound completely flatulent.

I prefer wellies to be loosish. I hate walking in long boots over long distances, I get cramp if they are snug, and I like to wear them over jeanes in welly socks, which can all provide bulk to encompass too.
  • Loose! You can put on several pairs of thick socks, or line the wellie with wool, or put innersoles in during extremely cold weather but if the boots are already a close fit, you have none of those options.

Unless I'm wading through ankle deep water constantly, I prefer good leather hiking boots, well dubbined to cope with any amount of slurry or horse manure.

What you really ought to be concerned about is that totally turn of the century stigma of a rubbed line around the middle of your calves from ill-fitting wellies. Such a give-away at the disco, don't you find?!!! :)
  • LOL, and I thought it was a daft question!!

I've gone for the smaller pair of the 2 - yes, they are sheepskin lined and there is wool around the top so no fear of lines: http://www.mandmdirect.com/products-Uggs-Kids-Millcreek-Wellington-Boot-Sorbet_XG123.htm not in 2 1/2 sadly. I tried the 3's and they were just too big, even with 2 pairs of socks so I went for the size 2's and with socks on they were perfect but I do not need to wear socks to be honest. My feet were like toast when I got back and I wore them around the house for a bit too.

They are for walking the dog and the fields around here are very wet and muddy at the moment - the kids cannot go into some parts as the water comes up past the tops of their boots and I've been wearing my ugg classics but they cannot copw with the water any longer. Good grip on these boots too.
