Start in safe mode, F8 at boot, and try it again.

malwarebyes and microsoft security essentials? Have you done an update and scan?

If you have access to another pc, download firefox (and malwarebytes if you dont have it), and install it on this pc and do a scan,

Never a problem; was just trying to rule out any potential issue with IE - which I refuse to use anyhow ;)

Sorry should have been more specific. The key is:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\INTERNET EXPLORER

Once you've clicked the [+] next to INTERNET EXPLORER in the tree view you need to click to on the INTERNET EXPLORER folder itself on the left hand side window to select it. Once it's highlighted in blue look for the 'Download Directory' string value in the right hand window

I installed ie 8, and the font was too small, so I tried to uninstall it, but of course it would only go so far.
Do you think it's because I uninstalled a part of it?
If so, how would I go about reinstalling?

This is what comes up in the right hand window.
    Default
    build
    customised version
    integrated browser
    mk enabled
    No3d border
    Phishing filter
    smart dithering
    version
    W2k version
  • The registry entry for IE8 should be here -
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
on the right pane there should be Download Directory (its on the top level ie above)
