  • DEBT In the black. Debt and mortgage free (It was a hard road). Saving like billy oh. Will never, EVER, owe anyone anything again. One credit card, paid off every month by D/D

HEALTH Continue to keep fit. Jogging, walking, swimming. Enter a 10k. Lose 4lbs.

SOCIAL Help my family. If you can't help your family what else are you on this planet for?
Take cheap holidays. Amazing how you can cut costs if you want. I'm lucky. I've got my free Bus Pass.

GENERAL Continue to study French. Perhaps, just perhaps, look at doing an Open University course but I'll have to find out what qualification you need to enrol.

Enjoy every day and do at least one thing each day which I will feel proud of, whether that is job related, home related, debt related, health related and no matter how small it is.

I have recently finished reading the book that has been mentioned many times on this site about how a woman managed to live on a pound a day, and I have been quite inspired by some of the stuff she has got up to, so have been online and have seen what is going on in the region in museums, galleries etc. and am attending a free author event at the local library tonight which sounds interesting.

Oooh whats the title and author?
  • ooo I agree with LIFE - I also veg out in front of the tv and comp! need to do more 'stuff' - adding it to my list xxx

    Hi Linda,

The OP did say we could comment on other people's improvement ideas so I hope you don't mind some comments...

My OH was diagnosed with T2 diabetes a few years ago. I have tonnes of recipe books so can recommend: Stella Bowling's one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Everyday-Diabetic-Cookbook-Stella-Bowling/dp/1898697256 if you like everyday ordinary meals, or any of Anthony Worral Thompson's ones if you like slightly more fancy foods, or his latest one if you like food from different countries. You can also find recipes and info at the Diabetes UK website http://www.diabetes.org.uk/ - click on the recipes icon on the right hand side. Joining DUK was one of the best things I did - they have a careline you can ring up and cry at (or talk lucidly to :o) if you need advice. I belive you can join for whatever you can afford to pay.

Also, there is a diabetes chat forum at http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/index.php - I used to go there quite a bit.

    HTH :)

    My areas:

Career: I will complete my professional qualification this year. I'm currently waiting to hear if I failed well enough with my dissertation to get a chance to resubmit or if I need to pay for the module again. When I hear I will quickly act on whichever I need to do. I will end up with this qualification sorted and a masters degree by the end of next year.
House: I will work out where we are with the DIY and make a plan to do some. Also I will work out a better schedule for my week so I can do more housework "little and often".
Meal planning: this is my biggie. I don't do this but am determined to try to reduce my food spend. This and my studies are my main priorities, then housework.

  • Hi Guys - Just came across this great thread when looking for the others I am on - mustnt spend too much time here BUT thought I would share the thing that has really worked for me as far as determination and motivation is concerned. So - it was a sports psychologist (whose name I forget but I will research today and get back with it later) who wasnt all fluffy but really a kick bum merchant who worked with a group of overweight, unfit, low self-esteem ordinary women. The main theme (and it has been poo pooed by others but works for me so I dont care) is the notion that your primative brain - he calls it your chimp - is driving you to do the things that helped women survive in cave-man type days (in evolutionary terms that was yesterday and brain evolution is still roughly there) especially when under stress. In contrast our modern "conscious" brain - dubbed the Queen - is the one we should be following. The chimp wants you to eat when possible (as a gatherer you never know when you will next find food and being plump means a nice fat store for feeding babies) - the queen knows the fridge is full, Tesco is round the corner. Chimp runs away from danger rather than confronting it and/or finds a nice strong Mr Cchimp to defend her. Queen knows how to conduct a business meeting/write a letter to the bank. So I wont go on but I just imagine my queen slapping down the chimp - naughty bad chimp - and it has really helped.
I will post again if I can find his name.
Bon courage everyone - get your crown rammed on your head and take charge.

  • Hi - Remembered the psychologist's name : Steve Peters. I tried to find if he had written a book and very scarily found my post (above) in Google. So - be warned this IS an open forum, be careful what you say!
