I fixed mum up with 18866 as she was calling her friend a lot and she is happy with that and i had the urge to get her using MSN but i realise it's not gonna happen as she hardly touches her PC as it is. She's talking about getting a laptop now though i'm not sure why.
You still with us fc123?

Back now.
Nice easy to watch and digest programme.....I must have a 'Fox' brain now.
It didn't really touch on a humans ability to sift and sort out all the info though.
Procrastination is the killer and the internet can really feed it. I fight against it all the time.....before online, I would waste time reading cruddy papers or mags, watcg telly (when I had reception) or just waffling around putting off tasks.
I don't think that's being addicted to internet...it's about learning to deal with the urge to put things off sometimes. A common problem for self employed.....esp the grotty tasks.0 -

In summary, yes, you can have online relationships, but be careful, & always remember what a real/true friend is, rather than commodify them.
Yes, this.
I think of some of you guy as friends. But then, thatsinteresting. e.g. recently two very dear people here both had tragic news. I wrote them lame PMs and hoped they'd know I was here for them if they needed to chat. What I wanted to do was to drive to their homes, make tea and food, and feed and hug them. with a real life friend they'd be half a stone heavier with a bulging freezer now. There are people, a few, for whom I have been able to do a little more ...but its never enough.
There are a lot of people I would like to meet. I was sad not to be able to accept an invitation to meet one of you lot in London recently (comitments here). One day I hope to put that right.
I know of a few people who have me via the net then married/live together. which I thnk is quite, quite amazing. Perhaps in someways the net allows us to be less shallow, to see the character..or at least parts of it, rather than the outside so much? On the other hand, I have been intrigued by how I have been interpreted by some...its not how I see myself! I wonder if its how my real life friends see me...0 -
I met my OH online on a music forum. We arranged to go to a gig, we met, we clicked, that was that.
Have other online pals I would like to meet in RL if I could afford the travel expenses.0 -
I find the thought of life without the net now quite scary. The lack of intellectual stimulation, of a countering force to the misinformation put out by our 'betters', deprivation of the opportunity to share ideas and build relationships with people I would never have met in a net-free world...
It would be a very impoverished life in many ways: the 21st century equivalent of illiteracy maybe, in the shutting down of opportunity, knowledge and experience.0 -

I like predictive text. It means I never know exactly what I'm going to say. which is a little bit of an adventure.
I don't do computer games either. I just don't get it. All my mates are well into them. I don't understand how to play them (& probably to an extent, why...:o)
I do have friends who jokingly call me a luddite. I refused to have a mobile phone for years. In fact, the only reason I got one, is because a mate gave me an old spare. Everyone said I sould be embarrassed about my "brick", but I didn't care. Eventually someone took pity on me/became too embarrassed to be seen in public with me & my brick, so changed it for an old small one they had. My current one was a birthday gift. I've never bought one!lostinrates wrote: »Yes, this.

This bought a lump to my throat...:o
A restoration of faith in humanity. It is humbling to know that there are people like this in the world. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

lemonelly, you are someone I'd love to have around in a crisis. But you've made me embarrassed now. I have to say, to redress the balance considerably, that I too have received amazing help and kindness from people here.
we were going to call our next dog Luddite but it doesn't go with our naming theme.:o0 -
