I dunno what you do but if you are on a low wage and forced to do overtime unpaid, then it could take you under the minimum wage.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

exactly,i think in the OP's case its termed overtime so the company can have a Saturday shift as required and save on the wage costs when its not0

No-one can be forced to do overtime; however if their contract is properly drawn they will be in breach of it should there be a provision to that effect. Therefore although your ex may have the right to decline the extra shift and the employer could not get a court order requiring him to he could be dismissed.0

i would say legally in most peoples cases they cant be forced to work overtime. however if you have the type of employer that expects you to do it you wont last long if you dont. you will certainly be one of the first out of the door whenever they need reduce numbers. its out of order i know but its the reality.
edit.
in this case the job is in a large car factory so it maybe a place that recognises unions. is he in the union. it maybe worth a chat with the shop steward. there maybe some way of comprimising by perhaps working overtime during the week instead.0
