CSA want £24,000 - need help

My husband was contacted by telephone yesterday by the CSA - he apparently owes £6000 on one child, which we have paid religiously every month but apparently he should have been paying £100 extra but they sent us letters with the wrong figure on so we were not aware of this discrepancy.

The second is for another child that we were not aware of for £16,000 . We only knew of her existence when she was about 9-10 and have certainly never been contacted before. We are just trying to organise a face to face meeting but would like some pointers before if necessary. We just really do not know where to turn, how long we will have before they want this money back, and where on earth we will get it from.

Any advice would be grearly appreciated.

You would like them to provide evidence at the face to face meeting of the contact they have had in respect of the second child - when did they make contact, how did they make contact etc? if they cannot provide this information then they should close the case as any case cannot be opened unless they have contacted the NRP. The figures could well be IMA figures which are based on a penalty assessment because they have no details relating to the income and circumstances of the NRP. If they can provide evidence that they sent a MEF to an address where the NRP was living (even if he didn't complete it) then the IMA can be converted to a proper assessment which will be usually much lower.

Get concrete evidence of the NRP's addresses of where he has lived over the whole period in question. You want to know the effective date of the assessment for the second child so you can prove where he was living. If they don't match up then you have a strong case for getting the arrears wiped out.

Unfortunately arrears due caused by CSA error still need to be paid - however, you should certainly complain via your MP and try to negotiate a more realistic time period over which to pay them. You should also request via your MP a special payment as compensation for the inconvenience they have caused you due to their error.
  • Don't want to appear thick but am new to this site and would just like some help with the abbreviations.

    IMA MEF NRP MP.

    Many thanks
  • IMA - Interim Maintenance Assessment. This is what the CSA put in place when the NRP (Non-resident parent) does not provide all or some of his/her details. This is a penalty assessment and is usually much higher than a normal assessment
MEF - maintenance enquiry form. The CSA sends these out (to both parties I believe) in order to calculate the maintenance assessment
    NRP - Non-resident parent
MP - not sure of the context of where you read this, but may be the normal abbreviation of member of parliament

Might be a good idea to request your Data Protection File, NACSA have a template letter on their website. CSA apparently now charge £10 for the Data Protetion file, but it should hold all information about your case, and could help you fight your cause.

You are not alone, due to CSA many many errors and a lack of wanting to put them right, we got letters saying we owed 34k, they then went on very quickly to get Liaility Order, CCJ and charge on our house for a debt I can and have proven I do not owe, ut awaiting Tribunal hearing date to set it all out and put it right - finally.

All I'm saying is, put in an appeal immediately against this 'decision' or alleged arrears, you must put it in writing, keep a copy for yourself and send recorded delivery, maing suire you keep and print off the Royal Mail barcode, and signature as proof they have received it.

    CSA Appeals address is:

    Child Support Agency Appeals Unit
    Peel Park Blackpool
    Pittman Way
    Preston
    PR11 2DN

Good luck, but please act swiftly, or they will, believe me!!!!!!!!

Blackpool and Preston are two separate places???? though as this is the csa it wouldnt surprise me if this was their address and it would explain rather a lot:rotfl: :p

This is the address on corresspondence we've had on many recent CSA Appeals letters to us, when we have sent letters to this address recorded they have always 'up to now' arrived safely.

But you 2 are right, most in CSA don't know a*** from elbows, so why should they know Preston and Blackpool are not the same place!!!!!!!!!!

    I agree
