help washing wool mans jacket

I bought a lambswool mans jacket today in a charity shop and don't want to pay for dry cleaning as it is expensive and wondered how I could clean it at home?

Do you think it would work if I washed it gently in warm water with a mild detergent and then rinsed and spin in washer? Or should I squirt it with a solution of water and detergent and hang on line to dry?

Thank you :)

Are there any washing/cleaning instructions inside - is it a jacket or cardigan?

You could either put in for dry cleaning in a multi load which would cost you less or wash it very gently by hand, rinse well and wring out carefully. Wrap in towel to take excess and then lay to dry flat on towel. HTH

Is it lined? If so, it may be worth snipping a bit of the lining to test for colour fastness.
Also if it's a constructed (tailored) jacket then there may be interlinings etc that would shrink or curl up in the wash.
With some of these items it's not so much that they will shrink, it's that all the component parts shrink to different degrees.

    Not sure I'd risk it.

  • Have the jacket dry-cleaned. If you spoil it by washing then it won't have been a bargain.

  • Thanks for the replies. Just an update...I gave it a go in the machine, I put it in, added some non bio liquid and let it fill. The drum went round a couple of times then I drained it, did the same for rinsing a couple of times and then spun it. It has come out looking and smelling fresh, given it a shake and hung on a hanger, smooting it out and reshaping it. Tomorrow when it dries I will give it a light iron with a cloth along the seams. Its as good as new, and yes, it is a lined, tailored jacket.

Makes me wonder why bother with the cost of dry cleaning, it is toxic anyway!

Chuffed to bits with my bargain, I got it off the '3 for a pound' rail at my local charity shop too!

    Hope this helps others... :)

  • Pleased to read that the jacket has survived being washed.
