Anyone can use a credit note from M&S, don't know about tesco but I am sure someone else will be along who does know. Presume if it is a credit note anyone can use.0

With Tesco it depends on the SA.
I find some will check your card and the voucher to see if it is a match.
Others will not bother.
I had one SA check the voucher and commented he could see it was under the name of Mr XYZ and the card was MRS XZY, so he know it was my hubby and that was ok.
Tesco's have been tightening up since the voucher disaster last year, when they stopped taking vouchers when you had not bought the product.
Only advise is to try. Worst case scenario, they will give it you back. If you are thick skinned, then it is not an issue. Just take it back, smile and say something like. Oh, sorry that belongs to my mum. If you want to get into real coupon using, you have to be very thick skinned. Some SA's think it is their own money you are trying not to spend and take it very personally that you are making any savings at all.
And before someone comes and has a go.... And some a very very nice.I want to be credit card and loan free by Christmas 20100 -
