Not to knock student photographers - it is a valid option - but if you see a student with some brilliant photos in their portfolio, pick one of them an ask "How long did it take you to set up this shot?" My experience is that some students lack the experience of only having one chance at getting an image and struggle with the pace of weddings - try and get someone who has done a very practical photography hnd/degree rather than someone with an Art degree specialising in photography.

We're having a semi-pro do ours, he mainly does portraits but is wanting to move into weddings (he's done a few with another photographer) He did one of the girls at work wedding in November and the photos were great so we've booked him for ours. We're getting him slightly cheaper as I work with him in his weekday job. He's covering the ceremony and doing formal shots then is doing some natural shots in the evening. Both of us hate posing for photos and the OH doesn't like his smile so we'll both be more comfortable having someone we know take them. He covers the Midlands so if you'd like his details then PM me.

visit loads, look at as many FULL COMPLETE portfolios as you can, not just the photographers best selection.

Decide on what your going to do with the photos after the wedding. Do you really want 50 prints in an album that might get put in a cupboard and only comes on on the rare occasion, or like me will you want to whack them all on facebook for all your friends and family to see all around the world.

I can them print of the images i want at a later date or make my own storybook when im feeling creative.

There are loads fo good photographers out there who dont charge the earth, some do charge the earth, its all personnal choice.

No not all student photographers are bad, most proffesional photogaphers were once a student, we all have to start somewhere. Some professional photographers have NO qualifications what so ever and are self taught.
