Hi. Things are very tight at the moment and I was wondering if you guys could advise me on what is the least amount I could reasonably and healthily feed a family of four on monthly? Kids are aged 7 and 11. Both my OH and I work fulltime but can bulk cook and freeze etc... on weekends. TIA.

You can save a lot by using dried beans, soaking them overnight (make sure to boil them if the directions state you have to) and added them to something like chili con carne as it bulks out the mince.
Buy milk and flour to make sauces as it is cheaper and can make a really cheap cut of meat taste great, parsley sauce, mustard, cheese etc.
Use leftovers and turn old chicken (say) into risotto or soup
If you have the oven on maybe cook some veg for soup
Use slightly passed veg for soup or stock or even in a pie where it does not need to look pretty.
Take food from home for lunch boxes and also make more then is needed in one go..you can often get stuff from the supermarket that is on it's sell by date, mince beef say..Buy several packets and cook a basic spag bog sauce but freeze half or more.

Hi

Have a look at the Grocery Challenge thread. From post number 5 downwards there is a host of recipes and ideas on feeding families on budgets :T
Also have a look at Cheap Recipes it's a thread put in by one of our lovely board guides, Pink, and links to many others. HTH0 -
Me again! I've just found the Grocery Budgets Thread. Some of the prices are out of date now but the principle remains the same - reducing spends

Weezl74, one of the OS regulars is attempting to put together a meal plan for a family of 4 for £100 a month. While it is still in the preparation stages there are lots of healthy frugal recipes and plenty of ideas to get you started.
