PA system?

I am just trying to work out exactly what is a "PA system" in a private function room at a pub?
I am having a small birthday party and hoping to have it at this pub in their function room and my mum is arranging it but we cant work out exactly what a PA system is?
Do we still need to book a dj or what happens? do the pub organise our music for us?
I dont like to phone places and my mum doesnt want to ring and ask what a PA system is either..
Any help would be fab thank you x

PA stands for Public Address. Basically a PA system is the CD player, Amplifier and Loud Speakers through which your music is played. Your DJ will bring his own, unless the pub has their own resident DJ. Just ask the landlord do you have a Dj or do we need to book one. He may book one for you.

As 'PA system' can cover everything from a lectern microphone for Cllr Snodgrass to something that Status Quo would use, you really need to ask the venue. In particular, if you just want background music, do they have a CD player and will it play MP3-CDs, do they have an input for an MP3 player/iPod if you want to use that. If you get a DJ then that implies dancing and more advanced CD mixing and most DJs will bring their own CD player / mixing kit, but will need to know whether they also should bring amplifier and speakers or whether the ones at the venue are suitable.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
