Play.com charging more for a 'free' figurine?!

Hi all,

I've just gone to Play.com to purchase 'Rabbids Go Home' for the Wii. I found it for £14.99 and the next link down they're offering the exact same game with a FREE figurine for £17.99.

Isn't this illegal to charge more for an item advertised as 'free'?

i think in this case its a packaged version of the game with figure
so technically a different item IYKWIM
end of the day they can charge what they like, you can often see differing prices on sites for what is the same item

I don't think that's right though Custardy. It's illegal to charge extra for an item you're advertising as free - regardless of packaging.

    wheres the law?
so if you get for example a singstar game with and without microphones
and on offer the one with mikes is cheaper than without
there you get more than the game for less and the mikes 'free'
if they listed the game and character without the word 'free' you would be okay with that?
if they have dropped the price of the solus game and left the one with the character the same then what?

Yes I would be ok with that (you're sounding very slightly rude BTW) if they removed the word 'free', but they haven't.

Where's the law? Well, all around you. You CANNOT charge for something that you are advertising as FREE.

Since I seem to have hit a nerve with you, I'm actually trying to look it up. It's called false advertising which trading standards deal with in case you fancy trying to prove me wrong.
  • I think they can get round it as both are shown with the same RRP £39.99 one is just discounted more than the other. So as the both started at £39.99 then technically the figure is free just not discounted as much as the one without.

That's an interesting take on it Princess. Maybe it's a kind of loophole in the law then. Thank you.

    trading standard UK or Jersey?
my point is saying its illegal is one thing but look at how its listed
im not defending play but on big sites you often see price anomalies, especially where they run similar items and one is dropped in price
  • yeah that is ropey, i think it might be in the discount thing though, thats a good point.
It only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'
