Will we ever get a mortgage?

Options
Hi

My partner and I tried to get a mortgage last year only to be told that my partner has default on his credit history. Basically five and a half years ago he defaulted on a payment (which he paid back within a month) but because of this his credit score wasn't high enough. It is due to come off this April so we just decided to wait until then. However just spoken to our joint bank account and they won't let us upgrade from a flex account. The lady said it was either because of how we use the account (has regular money going in and out of the account each month) or because of the credit rating. Now I'm panicking that his poor credit score is affecting me (Never had any defaults, healthy bank balances, have a small loan that I pay back on time). I'm also worrying about how credit searches affect my/our credit scoring (especially if they result in a decline on a product). So my questions are:
1)How will these searches affect credit scoring
2)How soon will partner's scoring go up after default comes off
3)Will his score affect my credit rating?

Can anyone help?

    Mutiple searches lowers your credibility
This score means nothing, it's a marketing ploy...what matters is whether defaults/ccj's on the file
When applying jointly if he has adverse this is taken into consideration rather than you clean history
  • If he defaulted 5 and half yrs ago this will be off his crdit file on the 6th year anniversary.

Some small lenders can consider mortgages up to 85% for those with defaults
  • Which lenders are these??

There are reasons us brokers cannot go bandying around lenders details on public threads. Sometimes we mention names, especially of the big lenders, but most times we can't do such. Furthermore, people only give us 1% of the info needed, and if we started recommending names of lenders we get drawn into a never ending application process which might fail as the person did'nt give all the relevant info up front, and then they would start threads of complaint.

We merely aim to give pointers for you to then follow up - typically with an experinced broker recommended by someone you know in your area.
  • You got me all excited then as well!!!! I'll investigate further, thanks for the pointer though!
