Dental Gum Shields?

I do muay thai boxing as a way to keep fit and at the moment I just use a shock doctor gum shield.
The instructor has suggested that people who are training regularly should consider seeing a dentist to get a gum shield. I'm going to talk to my dentist about it but I was wondering if anyone has had this done before and if so:
*how much did it cost?
*how many sessions did it take to complete?
*does it really make a difference?
Also I'm on a corporate health plan and I get money back from dental costs, does anyone know if I could claim the cost of the gum shield back? The plan is with simply health and the literature states any dental costs?

A gum shield made at the dentist will be specailly made to fit your mouth and teeth and is a lot better (and tighter) than the shop bought ones.
Prices vary depending on where you live and if you want any detail/ colour markings on the gumshield- £30-£70
The gum shield can be made in 2 appointments for you. The first appointment is for an impression of the teeth and the second appointment is to fit the gum shield. Varies depending on your dentist but can take between 1-2 weeks between the appointments for the gum shield to be made:money: Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou to everyone who has helped.0 -
Cool thanks, i didn't realise you could get them done with patterns that's really fun
And it's also good that it's only two appointments.
