Goodmans GBC1100 1 MP Charger. Looks like a handy charger. Has an LCD display, charges 1 to 4 AA/AAA, charges NiMh or Ni-Cd, reverts to trickle charge when the cells are nearly full.

It even refreshes Alkaline batteries. Does anyone know if this feature is of any use?, how many times you can refresh them?

Hope someone managed to get them. After a running battle with eBuyer they finally admitted that they didnt actually have any in stock when I ordered. (They showed 350 at the time of ordering).

    Lies included:
    "There was a picking error"
"We had a problem with the database"
    "It's shipped, Sir!"

Moral of the story - avoid eBuyer.

    Cheers,
    Mike

I have one of those charges paid about £15 from Argos a few years back. Mine was fine for a few years but one of the compartments is dodgy now and doesn't work properly.

It does charge normally batteries but it doesn't work with cheapo ones that you get from £1 shop. I charged two AAA normally batteries the other day for a remote.

Another thing I noticed about it is when batteries are charged and a trickle charge works is that I get a funny smell from it seems to only do this with normal batteries. I was going to get one of these a few weeks back but decided not to. I have two other charges but they don't do alkaline batteries like this one.

It now states on there web site (see below) I have had problems with Ebuyer in past on stock levels/delivery they fine if things go right its when problem incur they are almost as bad as ACER

Sorry, this product is not currently available for purchase.

This item is not available because we are currently out of stock. Why not search for an alternative product?

5 or 10 times perhaps. The problem is that alkaline batteries can leak, or even burst, if recharged. The cheaper the battery, the more likely it is to leak.

Yeah, but I actually ordered on the 17th July and they showed 360+ at that point. Unfortunately, they just start lying to me when I had to phone and query why they never sent them

Pls note despite what the manufactural claim, Alkaline Battery are not meant to be rechargeable.

The only known effective way of recharging Alkaline using any Alkaline "charger" is to recharge the Alkaline battery before it reaches 50% of its charge. You can possible get it up to 70 to 80% of the full charge depending on age of the battery.

For proper use, use a rechargeable Battery. Preferably NiMH.

When in trickle mode its best to remove the batt and turn of the charger. when batt gets hot due to inproper control of charge it'll produce funny smell. Unbranded rechargeable batt from ebay should be avoided. As I'd 2 x 2500mAh AA battery that crackers and eventually exploded. It was indeed a very very scary experience. I have to say not on this charger.

Hence looking for a new charger now and found this Goodmans stuff on Ebuyer. Had lotsa bad experience before. but else where is just to expensive.
  • Hi all :). I bought this Goodmans' charger but it didn't come with any instructions in the box. Can someone please email me a scan. Thanks.

As far as recharging alkaline batteries is concerned: this Goodmans charger doesn't recharge them (I don't think you can without damaging them), it probably reconditions them by cleaning the anode. There are a number of these devices currently available, but most try to do it too quickly. I'm currently testing the following Cranwell unit that cleans the anode over 72 hours. I’ll let you know how it goes.

  • I bought one of these years ago too.

It works fine, although these days it tends to be a little "dodgy". You can charge batteries up and they are flat the next day as though it *thought* they were charged when they were not and so on.

Also every so often, you'll come across a day when the charger just wants to flash on and off at you for a while and you never really know what it's going to actually DO with the battery.

    - That said - i use AAA's for the headphones at my pc and with 6 to rotate between it's worked for me so far. (Even if every so often a couple run out very quickly!)
