To make paper pots I use a PAPER POTTER £9.95 from the ethical superstore (on line).

Thanks. Does it just use newspaper and water or is there any glue or other products involved?
  • Great thread, that has given me some more ideas! I already

*reuse bread wrappers for sandwiches and freezer bags
*reuse fancy jars for own homemade jam (made from home grown strawberries)
*reuse old odd socks for cleaning blinds (speeds job up if you put one over your hand)
*keep toilet roll tubes & cardboard cereal boxes, egg boxes etc for grankids to use to make castles, houses, space ships etc, blue peter style
*old clothes too tatty for cs or to pass, on get used as rags, floor cloths, dusters
*old bedding cut up and used to make dolls pram/cot bedding
*old greetings cards used for shopping lists & make great bookmarks

    Paper Potter

Instructions - cut dry newspaper into strips 8cm x 57cm approx. roll strip loosely around potter and roughly fold over excess paper. Press potter onto base, turn. Remove pot and fill with compost. Plant seedling or sew seeds directly. Paper pot will bio-degrade when transplanted to garden.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but I use the translucent small bags you put loose fruit in at the supermarket as freezer bags.

I always keep any packaging that comes in the post for me for re-use too.

I keep jam jars etc for either making my own jams and sauces, or for putting cut flowers from the garden in during the summer months, they look much more pretty chic than any mass manufactured expensive shop bought vase. I use them to put tea lights in too.

Fab idea, must get sowing soon......

    Thanks for the tip!

I forgot I do this too. I started my leaks off in toilet roll holders, as long as you put them in the soil damp they will biodegrade naturally.

I have also kept egg cartons - they are sitting along the patio ledge inside full of seed potatoes chitting for planting next month!

  • An empty salad cream jar makes an elegant vase for a posy of garden flowers. Makes a nice little gift and you don't have to worry about getting the vase back.

The nice fronts of greeting cards, remounted on home made cards.

The nice fronts of greeting cards just cut out to make postcards for quick notes.

Screw top bottles for elderflower cordial.

I was once given (by and old lady who crocheted non-stop) all the ends of yarn she had cut off. I never did find a use for these. Any ideas?

When DH & I celebrated special birthdays recently (only 6 weeks between our birthdays) we had a barn dance. We got a roll of green banqueting roll for the tablecloths, & made small square cloths to liven the tables up using gingham bought cheaply at the market. But my favourite touch was the vases of flowers on the tables & windowsills - jam jars (I saved them for months in advance) with gingham ribbon tied round, with yellow, orange & gold flowers in. The jars were mostly Tiptree jam as we live quite close to Tiptree, and we left the labels on which looked really nice.
