Do they think we're stupid?

I tend to remember prices of things that I regularly buy. Went in Sainsburys today and noticed that the 1.5Kg extra lean mince is £4.99 (like it always is). However, it's now being advertised as having £2 off??

So that's £4.99 down from £6.99. This just isn't so.

I've also noticed Tesco and Somerfield's price 'reductions' are not reductions at all.

they'll have had it at the higher price in a different store so technically as a company you are buying it at £2.

Morally I think it is wrong but legally they get away with it.

I think that it is comet that have a few stores that sell things much higher than normal just for this purpose. ie so that all its normal stores can then slap a 20% or even 50% off sticker on things without actually having to reduce the price.

Where I work we occasonally get in what appears to be a new item and it immediatly gets put on sale with 20% off on it. I can only assume that the same item has been on sale at another store at a higher price and so they claim it is reduced from that price.

They do think you're stupid, because most of their average customers are!!

I suppose you can't expect customers to remember all the prices, but it's a sad fact, that retailers KNOW that if something is reduced, then people will buy it, just because it's reduced, without analysing whether

    i) they really want it
    ii) its worth it

moral of the story - ignore reduced signs
