How much import tax on wine?

I bought a bottle of English white wine from Asda this week, at the princely sum of £1.92.

Now, at that price, I'm not expecting much and will probably chuck in a bit of blackcurrant squash to make it into a homemade rose.

But, I was thinking, I remember ages ago seeing a thread about the breakdown of how much a bottle of wine from somewhere like France costs to produce including the amount of import tax.

At £1.92, without the import tax, what would this be the equivalent to pricewise of say, a bottle from France - £2.99? £3.49??

Just curious really

I might be brave and open it tonight!

I'm not sure that there is ANY IMPORT tax on wine.

There is DUTY added but that is paid on all wine be it British, French, Italian or Outer Mongolian (except the few litres available in the DUTY free allowance if you've been OUTSIDE the EEC and brought some back with you)

Also don't forget there is VAT but that also applies to all wines from anywhere if purchased in the UK.

So a UK bottle that costs £1.92 will have the same duty as a French one bought in the UK, VAT varies with selling price but would only be 1p extra on a French wine (or whatever) costing £1.99

So a British wine at £1.92 "has the equivalent to pricewise of say, a bottle from France " of £1.92"

Incidentally the current duty for STILL wine is £15.09 for 9 litres

    (9 litres being a 12 bottle case at 0.75litre/bottle)

    so it's just under £1.68 a litre or almost £1.26 a 75cl bottle

The VAT included on a bottle selling for £1.92 would be 30p

Taking off VAT and DUTY (30p + £1.26) leaves 36p

That's the cost of growing the grapes, picking them, making the wine, buying a bottle to put it in, bottling it, the vineyard hopefully selling it at a profit, transporting it to ASDA plus their markup !!
    All for 36p ! IMPRESSIVE !

    CORRECTION

As of Midnight on Sunday 26th March 2006 the duty on a case (9 litres) went up to £15.50 - that's another 4p on a litre - now just over £1.72 a litre

    3p extra on a 75cl - now at £1.29

So that leaves ONLY 33p for everything else !

    blimey

Think it might need a bit more than a dash of squash in it to make it drinkable then!

Cheers for letting me know. I don't know why, Ijust presumed wine brought in would have some kind of charge/duty/tax on it opposed to something made in this country.

Ah well, you never know it might be ok.........;) ...............ok, maybe it won't..........:o
