Bradford n Bing claim I owe them from 2002!?!

Had a few calls from Bradford and Bingley (that's who I was with, is it Santander now?) recently. They are claiming that I defaulted on a mortgage payment in 2002 and I owe them £79. I've always paid direct debit and let the lenders and my bank sort it out and to my knowledge haven't ever missed a payment. When I asked them to explain how this could have happened they couldn't really, but said that at some point the amount was bigger but it's got smaller over the years. I asked why it is my fault, and why they haven't asked me to sort it in the last 8 years? No explanation to satisfy me forthcoming, and nothing to convince me that it's not their fault. I was more shocked than anything to be hounded (4 times in a week) for this money which is a relatively small amount to chase after 8 years. In the absence of them being able to explain what I had done to miss the payment, they suggested I phoned my bank. I did so but their records only go back 6 years. Any thoughts anyone? Due to the caller not being too understanding of my shock and non compliance of such a bizarre and unreasonable phone call, they suggested it was logged as a complaint and let the complaints dept take a look at it but I can't imagine too much sympathy can you!!?? lol

Now take what you have told this forum and put it in writing to their complaints department. Once logged it is in their court to inform you. I would question that chasing an amount after 8 years even if it is still a current account is TCF, but nothing surprises me when it comes to chasing money.0

Santander did not take over the Bradford & Bingley mortgages - they are still owned by the government. It was only the savings and branches that Santander bought.I am a Mortgage Adviser
