Is debt management the nail in the coffin?

  • Hi geniegal,

Your doing the right thing it is very hard. I skirted round my debts for about 2 years before going on a DMP with the CCCS. They are so helpful unjudgemental and really do give you that light at the end of the tunnel.

The 1st couple of months at least will be hard. The people on here are so so helpful and full of support and advice. Goodluck with your call this morning.

  • Hi I'm in the same boat as you and hopefully with the support of all these great people on here we will make to a sunnier outlook. Its just so scary right now isent it? Im putting off sending the letters CCCS have told me to - I know I have to and knowing I am not alone is giving me strength. None of meant to get into this predicament. So hey ho I guess we will be starting at about the same time! Good luck

    Hi Geniegal

I'm only new to this and our dmp starts on the 1st March, but honestly in the last few weeks I've gone from not sleeping / waking in the early hours terrified about what was to happen to us, throwing up in the morning with the stress, to being able to think calmly about our debt, feel like I can breathe again, I can read our little ones bed time stories without having half of my brain do disaster calculations! It doesn't feel like an avalanche it feels like a life boat!!
    Good luck!

  • I have been avoiding my debts since Uni (20 years ago), the realisation that I am actually going to do something about it (DMP starting soon) has been liberating. It helps having a supportive partner and I finally feel like I've honest to myself.
In answer to your question "final nail in the coffin". I feel the total opposite and as for future credit, well having a good credit rating got me into this mess, so I fully intend to never get credit again, apart from the mortgage, and I'm lucky I suppose as my fixed rate mortgage has 3 and a half years to run, so that's the only credit I will use.
It's actually quite interesting just how many people don't/rarely use credit- many more than you would think!!

  • It's great to be able to live within your means and budget for things rather than just buying on credit.

And being on a dmp it's lovely to be in credit in the bank the day before payday even if it is only a couple of quid whereas before there was always too much month at the end of the money.

    Good luck.

The only bad thing I can say bad about my DMP with the CCCS is I am now addicted to figuring out how to pay it off quicker ;) lol.

It really has breathed a new life into me and I even manage to confront my debtors when they are acting a little wide with me.

  • I dont know what to say, I really don't. This is amazing to hear nothing but good about dmp, especially what professor pat says about the good credit rating actually being bad for those lacking self discipline.

i can now see that i am my own worse enemy when it comes to borrowing and the dmp will be like taking the booze off the alcoholic, ie you have no access to the thing that gets you into trouble.

i spoke to the cccs and you are right they are great. i have my 90 min phone interview next thurs

    thanks everyonbe feeling better already

Go for it, you will notice difference and I can honestly say that I have been turned into a non-spending alien, something I just never did, I flashed those cards like a looney, but no longer and I think I actually may have money left over at the end of this month:T:T:T:T Something I can never remember doing before!!!!
