Gave notice today, was quite nerve-racking epecially as we had the wrong birth certs!! Apparently you need the 'full' ones, with parents details on, we both only had the normal short one! We are okay, everything done but we need to show 'full' ones before registrar will complete paperwork, cue frantic phone calls today to get them ordered!!
:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:
  • Oh no Franny! Glad we had our passports as we just took those, made it so much easier. We gave our notice a couple of weeks ago and it made it all feel 'real'!

Glad you got it booked Shel, hope you won;t be leaving the June thread behind though! xxx

Giving notice is the civil equivilent of having your banns read. So yes! it's £30 each and valid for 1 year at the venue you have named on the day you give notice.

Complicated by the fact we've given notice in one county and need the paperwork to take to another county so we can get the whole thing booked!! So REALLY need to get 'proper' birth certs!! So, everyone, make sure you use your full birth certs or a current passport, as we were very lucky that the reg did everything rather than cancel and is allowing us to pop in with 'proper' certs when they arrive!!

You can legally give notice 1 year before your wedding date:

    For example:

Wedding day is 6th November 2010. (mine!)

Earliest you can legally give notice is about 26th November 2009. (you need to allow time, 2 weeks to display the notices in public so if anyone has a legal reason they can object)

This will be valid until 26th November 2010 at the venue you stated when giving notice, if you change venue you have to give notice again at an extra cost of £30 each.

I am a registrar (well in training on marriages at the moment will be registering.conducting from May onwards! I am a birth and deaths registrar usually) and this is the legal side of it, However your local office may be very busy and will advise you to give notice nearer the time if they have no avaliable appointments.

Once you have given notice and no one has objected the authorities (blue forms showing it is legal for you to marry) are issued and will need to be given to the register office registrar who is going to marry you (if it is in a different district).

Any more questions, let me know and i can do my best to answer them!

Also apologies for my spelling its bad tonight but i'm really tired and spell check isnt working, usually much better but just want to go to bed as i had a root canal on my teeth yesterday and it really hurts!

Oh and it is a good point about bringing the correct documentation! short birth certificates (just childs name) are not valid anywhere apart from child benefit! The law changed in 2004 and you now need a full certificate (parents names on it). This goes for passport applications etc!
