I have effectively sacked myself

Right. Well, long story shortish, you all know I've been doing freelance work that ended up with me stepping into a role cos someone left, and that role has been getting progressively harder and more responsible, to the point where every day last week I felt sick going in, and yesterday actually cried on the train at the mere thought of having to go in and do the job. :(

So I spoke to my boss and said I don;t have the experience for what the role has become, that I can;t do it, and that they ought to fulfill the threat they made last week of replacing me, because I cannot do it.

He was great about it, said I've done a fantastic job, that I'm great, that I don;t have the experience but have done really well, that he'll see if there's another role for me and lots of nice things. :)

But now I have effectively sacked myself and may end up without work.

AND I still have to go in for the next month or so and do the job I can;t do until they appoint someone.

Clearly I had to say something or go mad, so why do I feel I just screwed up?

  • Hi skintchick,

I absolutely think you have done the right thing - this has been eating away at you for weeks - the chat went much better than you expected and NO JOB is worth you crying over as I know only to well.

Congratulations, you have the money behind you to meet your outgoings and you wanted to be freelance anyway! Be positive! This is good - you have done the right thing for your health and well being!

Thanks for your reply to my PM by the way - appreciated.

    I agree with the others.

Your health and happiness does count for something and better to be honest and upfront and not end up having some kind of breakdown. I'm sure that something else will come your way, especially if the feedback has been positive.

    Fingers crossed for you

Yep I think you did the right thing. It really does sound as if they value you, and hopefully they can find you a different position. I also wouldn't be surprised if they give you more support for as long as you're there. Well done you!

If it was making you that unhappy you obviously did the right thing. Lifes too short to be stuck in an unhappy job. Hope everything turns out OK for you.

You should have already been looking! :naughty: If you haven't there'll be trouble...

Do you? IIRC, your contract ended months ago, and you've been coming in on verbal "contracts" because of:
    1. The money
    2. The kindness of your heart :A

You are in the enviable position of having money coming in every day, yet able to go into another contract with effectively zero notice. Many contractors would give parts of their body for that.

If you feel guilty about leaving without notice, ask your boss to raise your hourly rate in return for working a notice period. If they refuse, then they aren't bothered about a notice period, so why should you be?

You haven't. You've done what is best for you. The only criticism I could make is that you took too much of the responsibiliy for the difficulties you've had upon youself. Your work:
    • Should have supported you more
    • Should NEVER have threatened you

And they need reminding of that.

Other than that - YOU DID GOOD! :grouphug: :grouphug: :j :j

I would just like to clarify that they haven;t treated me badly at all. Quite the opposite - they gave me an opportunity but sadly I really do not have the experience to enable me to cope with the very demanding role. But they haven;t been nasty to me, and my boss is lovely and a great manager.

I totally agree with what everbody's been saying on here. You shouldn't (and don't) have to put up with a job that leaves you in tears. There are always greener pastures out there as long as you are prepared to look for them.

I hope you find a great job soon. In the meantime ask for a juicy wage rise!
