Advice please

I hope one of you guys will be able to help me with this wee problem I have!
I used to have phone/broadband with Tiscali (who I believe have been bought by Talk Talk) and closed my account in 2008 after they were most unhelpful after my account was hacked.
Last week, out of the blue, I received a letter from a debt collecting agency demanding £40 from the old account. They said the usual blurb...as I have not responded to previous letters, blah blah-actually I have had no previous letters and this one I got last week was the first I heard of it. Now even tho it's only £40, I'm not prepared to part with it until I have proof that I owe it.
Can anyone tell me where I stand with this please?
Any advice would be welcomed.
Thank you

Hi sharalee
Out of interest are you still at the same address you had when you were with them (just wondering if previous letters have gone elsewhere)
As a starting point I would send this prove it letter - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=11570893&postcount=2A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Hi thanks for the link.
Yes, still at same address....
This is puzzling me somewhat. Why wait 2 years?
Very odd. Don't mind paying if I actually owe it, just seems weird to me0 -
Who knows - they are probably so disorgansied that they only just realised there was a debt on the account and decided to sell it on. No making sense of some organisations!
Have you ever checked your credit report and do you know if its listed on there? if it is and a default is registered you might need to take action to get it removed.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
I actaully checked it a few weeks ago, didn't notice it there TBH...0
