Offline network printer won't wake up

I work on the information I'm given. I didn't know if the user does or doesn't have a wireless printer so I troubleshoot with the information I have and work on the principles the users may not know what each equipment is. Would you be surprised to know there's still some people have trouble understanding what a power button does on computers?
Looks like neither of us paid attention, did you actually read the post fully. I didn't, just noticed the model is MFC-9440CN...oh look, it ISN'T wireless! Guess you're wrong too and it pays to re-read posts like I do as you notice the things you miss then first time....
Mike, can I ascertain if your printer is actually using a network cable or a USB cable please before we go any further ?
If you go into control panel - printers. Right-click your printer then go to the tab called ports. Is it described as USB000X or something like 192.168 or BROTHER XX.
There's a lot of difference between a USB printer going offline and a network printer. Network printers can be incorrect IP address or missing installed printers... ones with different hostnames. USB printers can be faulty drivers, cables, names, etc....
It's best to know how it's configured first...

Before your edit, I was just about to post mentioning how he mentioned the model number, and hence how you didn't "work with the information given".
With your edit in mind, would you kindly point out where I said his printer was wireless?0

I wasn't working with the information given because I skipped out the model number in the post and I spotted it when I re-read the topic so I could cover the progress made so far
As for the post with wireless that's because I was thinking of something else at the time of posting instead of network config I was thinking of a wireless configOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

 Yeah, sure. You were right about one thing, it does pay to re-read posts, doesn't it?0

If you have an issue with me I suggest you discuss it to me in a PM or a forum moderator. Not dragging out a post with an argument over petty mistakes I have made, in which case you will be ignored by me anyway because I'm more interested in fixing problems than nit picking errors made in posts.Owner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

Your original unedited post contained an ever-polite "thank you very !!!!ING much", and did not contain any information whatsoever that could help the OP with his problem. In fact you contrasted him with someone who does not know what a power button is. I do feel partially remorseful for being party to this thread derailing (sorry Mike) but I am certainly not the one who started it.0

I did actually type a reply to this, but I'm not going to continue fuelling the argument
Mike let us know if you need any further help or get stuck...

Is it a HP printer by any chance??
Seen this problem many times its the printer which goes to sleep and will not wake up.
A simple power off then off of the printer might help0

            It's a BROTHER MFC-9440CN
I normally use it in my office which is a conservatory at the back of my property, as it's quite cold in there during the colder months I bring my laptop into the dining room and work from there.
This means I have to take out the USB cable from the printer and insert a ETHERNET cable and connect wirelessly through my Netgear router.
Now and again I need to use the port in the router for another item so I take the ETHERNET cable out temporarily, It's when I plug it back in that I have the problem.
 Hope that all makes sense.
I think I sort of know about the static IP thing as I remember setting up my PS3 with a static IP. (long time ago though)
Thanks for all the input so far, I have now re-installed the printer but would still like to know how to stop it happening again.0
