Offline network printer won't wake up

My printer won't wake up after disconnecting and reconnecting the ethernet cable, it's offline and all the docs just go to the print que.
It's really annoying, last time I had to delete it and set it up again but I don't want to keep doing that everytime.

Any advice would be great

I did try that but nothing happened, can't understand it.

    Are the drivers correct ?

Dumb question, but have you tried opening the printer properties and then selecting the options Printer > Use Printer Offline (unticked) ?

I tried that but it doesn't do anything, in control panel> printers the network printer is there with a tick showing as default printer but it says it's offline, I try right click> properties> refresh, use offline etc. but nothing, there is an option to connect but it is greyed so can't be selected, if that makes any sense.

Pinging is used to test for network response. Your printer most likely isn't networked, it's just you mentioned you removed a network cable (I'm assuming USB cable)....

It works by opening a cmd prompt (start - run - cmd) then typing

ping printername (i.e - ping abcde...)

It only works with network printers, not local USB ones

It sounds like you're living in the dark ages, assuming it's rare to come across printers on a network and therefore the OP must be confusing his cables. There's one on grabbit at the moment for £40 that connects to a wireless network.

Mike, I reckon you have a similar problem to me. I'm not sure how much of this you'll understand, but here goes: Every time you turn your printer off and on again it has to get an IP address on the network again. If you haven't set up a static IP (or told your router/modem to always give your printer the same IP), then it'll sometimes obtain a different IP, and your computer will be unable to connect to it as it's looking under the wrong IP address.

Your two solutions are to either set up your printer so it has a static IP address (read the manual for this), or - not available on all routers - set up your router so it always gives your printer the same IP address.

EDIT: This will probably be of some use for the first solution. Read pages 8-9, 16 and 19 (or 8-12 if you use that software)
