Open learning courses

Hi can anyone help? My 16 year old daughter has just left school and intends to start college in September. She has found an Open Learning Course she would love to do. The course is £450 and we are not in a postition where we can afford that at the moment, does anyone know if she could get a grant/discount bearing in mind her age or for any other reason.

Who is the course with? Some of the online course companies only offer courses to over 18's:confused: . Its brilliant that she wants to learn. Could she not attend a normal college and apply for EMA?

Are you on any benefits? Sometimes certain benefits can be a passport for other financial help IYSWIM.

Has she completed Open Learning course before.
You are expected to do lot of work at home.

Beware of expensive training courses that promise the earth.

sorry to jump on the thread here but, I've been told that as I am in reciept of Incapacity benefit then I can do a course. I told the advisor I would prefer to do a course from home and she said it was fine. I have in mind something leaning towards computers. Can anyone advise on any courses they are aware of that I may be able to do from home.

Thanks, not sure if there's an age limit on this course, its Event Management and Wedding Planning. She has a place at college for September to do Travel and Tourism, but has now seen this course which they don't do at college and has her heart set on it, as this is what she really would like to pursue as a career. I am on benefits so maybe I'll have to ask there.

No she hasn't done a course before and she is aware of the amount of work she would be expected to put in, I am a little wary though.

I started a thread here a couple of weeks ago which might help:

TBH I cant imagine how a Travel and Tourism course is going to benefit her in what she wants to do. I'm doing T&T and I would have thought Business Studies would be more relevant.

What do you want to learn ??
-Wordprocessing, office packages, ECDL (computer driving licence) ??

You need to find the Open Learning course programme & make your choice.
Contact local college & call Learndirect about Open Learning courses.

Problem is you may need certain software to do the course.

Thanks Peter, that gives me a better idea on how to begin. I'll have a little look around and maybe contact the local college.

Not sure how helpful this thought is. Have you considered your local library? Our local ones in Essex run a great deal of Learndirect cources on computers that you can either take by attending the Library at booked times or take the software home to do there for a smaller charge. There are even some free ones, possibly a bit basic for 16 year old as they have been brought up with the basic computer knowledge from school but something that could be looked into.

I took several courses about 1 year ago so you would need to check whether still available but thought I mention incase any use to anyone.
