Joint mortgage - moved abroad!!!

Help!!!
Me and an 'ex-friend' took out a joint mortgage 2 years ago, and after 9 months he moved to canada and got citizenship. I then had to get a lodger in (on his behalf) to help him with his half of the mortgage.
About 6 months ago, the lodger moved out, but he wouldnt pay any more to the mortgage, so since then I have been paying it on my own.
He is no longer my friend for that reason and many others.
I have spoke to the mortgage company, a couple financial advisors and a solicitor who all tell me that I am liable for this mortgage if it doesnt get paid. And that they wont bother chasing him.
I am happy to take on the mortgage, but the mortgage company wont let me take it on in my name only, because my salary doesnt meet their criteria.
Surely there must be someway I can get his name off the mortgage, so he doesnt make any money from any sale in the future. I have worked out I have paid over £3000 more than he has.
All I want is his name off the mortgage. Is this possible???

It has been causing me a lot of stress over the last 12 months, and want to find out for sure. I dont seem to be able to get any decent help, and feel that i'm stuck in a no win situation, where he can only gain.

He has accused me of stealing his stuff (the stuff he left behind, in a house which I live in, so how can I steal anything)
We also have a joint account which all the mortgage and bills come out of, to which i was in the process of cancelling and changing all the direct debits over to my current account. On Friday he transferred £450 into his own personal account. This is a form a stealing but I cant do anything as its a joint account, so I will be left with the debt he is creating.

Im completely stuck unless I can get him off the mortgage somehow. There surely must be a loophole somewhere.
If anyone can help, it would be hugely appreciated. I would go as far as giving someone a reward for getting me the info so I can get out of this mess.

Many thanks
