Now I dont usually like to take the p*ss out of people but you would think an employment agency would at least hire people that could spell or cast an eye over adverts that illiterate people post.

And employers can now input their own ads via the website, that are then later checked and if necessary amended by the DWP.

    But not until 48hrs later!

I see loads of badly spelt & grammatically incorrect ads that have been copied & pasted onto the Jobcentre website - it's a pity that the standard is so poor these days.

And where exactly have I made fun of people? Am I not allowed to find it funny that a company who fills vacancies on behalf of other companies cant even write ads correctly?

Have I said all illiterate people are morons of anything along a similar line? Didn't think so.

Would you want a company you run to be represented in that way? Would you pay good money to advertise a vacancy and not have it wrote correctly?

Theres no excuse for this kind of thing, whatever the reason for it, a bad education or a disability it doesn't make a difference, it doesn't take two seconds to do a spell check.

I'm sure if that recruitment agency received a CV with such poor spelling it would go straight in the bin.

I totally agree with this, and would add that the standard of literacy has in my opinion, fallen over the last few years, to the extent that many people do not see anything wrong in being illiterate.
In this case, the recruitment agency, should have noticed and amended the errors, but sadly they have shown a complete lack of pride and professionalism.
A couple of years ago, I was being interviewed for a job, and unknown to me, the agency had decided to alter my CV in order to, as they put it - "make it more presentable for the client". I was under the impression that the person interviewing me was looking at my CV, until he asked me how I spelt my name and the town where I lived. I was surprised but told him, whereupon he asked me why it was incorrect in my CV. It was only when I looked at the CV, that I realised what had happened, and to this day I do not know if he believed me.
I did not get the job, but I did take up the matter with the agency, who were unfortunately not that bothered about it.
Basic literacy and numeracy is so important, because it provides others with an insight into your character. If I was an employer, I would not take on someone who is illiterate, because I would question their ability in other areas, and would worry that they have no pride in their work, and are incapable of reaching and maintaining high standards.

The company I work for is advertising an forthcoming event. They have printed A3, colour posters to do be placed in various places around the county and want as many people as possible to see them.

There are two glaring spelling mistakes on it. I had to post one in a council office. When it was pointed out to HQ we were told that they had to go out to have the maximum time to advertise the event. I cannot believe that no-one checked it before printing loads of them. In fact I cannot believe that somebody could not spell in the first place!

Did you not have two seconds to check your own post? The typos aren't so bad but "wrote" for "written" is every bit as atrocious as the spelling in the job advert. I would never normally point out errors in people's spelling and grammar as it doesn't seem to be the done thing on this forum but I couldn't resist the open goal.

I know what you mean, Nixer. Now lets have a look at your sentence...

That's better. Really annoying, isn't it?

This advert would also be deemed as unfair as it could be seen as discrimination against 'unenthusiastic' Tractor Drivers.

    I kid you not.

I think it was a couple of weeks ago, there was an advert for a 'reliable' person (can't think what the exact role was), but had to be removed because it discriminated against 'unreliable' people.

Only yesterday up here in the North East, a hairdresser contacted JCP to advertise for a 'Junior Stylist' in her hairdresser's.

The JCP staff in their wisdom, explained that she could not use 'junior' in the job title as there were implications of 'ageism'.

She now has to apply for a stylist where loads of over qualified people will apply.

Junior in this context of course does not apply to age but to experience. The hairdresser even stated she had a 'junior stylist' in her forties.

    Everyone's going mad!

    A few things I've been advised to not put in adverts;

Energetic - discriminates against people with ME/depression and other daft excuses for not working

    Enthusiastic - see above

Flexible - discriminates against people who may have arthritis etc if not used in a clear context

    Young - obvious age discrimination.

So now we employers just have to lie to people about the reason we don't take them - instead of being honest and saying "oh you're too old, you're pregnant, you're too dull" etc etc we have to give them made up stuff.
