Unfortunately with your lack of qualifications and skills you're going to have to go back into something pretty low-grade like you did before.
I am sorry but I have to disagree with the first part of your post. With 8'O' levels, 2 'A' levels (in difficult subjects), plus 20 years of getting off of her backside and doing difficult, demanding and often thankless jobs, OP does not lack qualifications or skills. She is clearly hardworking and responsible -valuable skills, not to mention her work as a french polisher and piano tuner.
OP - try to view this as an opportunity to change or improve your life and to do something that you have always wanted to. Go and sign on, but also consider training courses, vocational courses etc. You want to work in law. I also qualified as a lawyer, before changing direction five years ago and training as a counsellor - I am only two years older than you. You have A levels, what about applying for university? Or working in an advice centre - CAB are always looking for people and they have paid opportunities as well. Even if you have to work and study part-time, as I did when I changed career, it is still possible. My neighbour is a receptionist, studying part-time to become a dentist. My SIL works full-time and started a jewellery design course last year. She wants to start her own business eventually. There are opportunities, but you need to find them - no-one is going to hand them to you I'm afraid.
Good luck x

snodgrass, I would pm you but I don't want to break any rules. Have you thought to getting a basic job and then looking at something else that can help you build a better career around it? I work for a company that enables you to do this (well I am self-employed and work alongside them rather than for them) and I would love to be able to show you how it works. If you do think you might want some info I am happy to provide it so please let me know.
Kat x3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!
