It takes 6 years for a default to clear from your file.
I know you partially paid AFTER the default but i don`t think this helps.

Did they send you a default notice out prior to putting the default on your file? If they did then there is little you can do now. You might have been able to negotiate getting it removed as part of a settlement but if its now settled you have no bargaining power with them.

How long ago was the default? are you certain that is what is stopping you getting new credit? what new credit have you applied for? it may be that other issues are affecting your chances of getting new credit (such as total amount of debts/amount of available credit/ salary etc)

No - it you did default and they sent you a notice then its correct. Once its on it stays on for 6years. This is to show other lenders that you have not paid debt in the past.

Occasionally people have managed to get a default removed as part of a settlement deal. But unfortunately its too late to attempt that now.

If it helps although it will stay on for 6 years new lenders will take less notice after a couple of years (especially as its an isolated incidence). After that time they are more likely to look at your more recent credit behaviour, the amount of other debt and credit you have available and whether they think you can afford new credit.
