no idea what to do....

Hi All,

Not sure where to start but would appreciate if any one could offer some advice, I am in serious debt, not entirely sure how much because I dont know who all my creditors are; I have/had a gambling problem (going to meetings since Jan) to the point where I would take money from where ever i could get it, (I'm not proud of any of this behaviour) I would take out mobile phone contracts and sell the phone to make money, I have taken numerous loans and defaulted, I even got other electrical stuff on HP (PC's & TV's etc) and sold them to fund my gambling addiction.

Now I dealing with the gambling, but my debts frighten me to death, My wife has an idea that Ive ran up some debt and she has been really understanding but I dont think Ive got the balls to tell her all of it until I know what I can do about sorting it out

I have tried reading up on going bankrupt but have come across info that if I have willingly gotten into dedt it may be refused.

any help greatly recieved

thanks

Firsty WELLDONE in posting on the forum. And in facing your addiction. Have you contacted Citizens Advice? This would be a good idea I think.
Get down on paper what you owe and to whom. Then you have at least some idea about how much you owe. Then you can begin a repayment plan.
Chin-up! keep us posted about progress, then we can offer more ideas for you.

Hi and welcome and well done for facing up to your debts and problems.

Firstly you need to try to make a list of who you owe and how much. Have you got a pile of letters chasing your for payments (or possibly an unopened pile of post?) this is the place to start, sorting the paperwork into a seperate pile for each debt to try to fully understand your current situation.

You might also want to get copies of your credit report from experian and equifax (free trials if you remember to cancel or £2 each for the statutory report).

Good luck in finding this out and making a start.

  • Hi,

Thanks, I have probably got a bit of work to do on the gathering debt info (had a habit of binning anything that looked like a collection letter!),

I also know there are debts that have not managed to track me down yet (I moved home a little while ago)

Sorry if Im asking the obvious, but will it be easy for me to see who I owe money to from my credit report?

    Thanks Again!

Your credit report will give you an idea but it won't necessarily be a full picture. It can be a good place to start though.

I think trying to get the debts and a plan clear in your mind before telling OH is a good plan. Also there are a number of ex-gamblers around on this forum who will have tips on preventing you from slipping back who all support each other - there is a thread somewhere if you want that support.
