because they're still here and have no plans to go anywhere else

that post wasn't directed at you btw

But we don't know what other peoples plans are...perhaps they'll retire abroad having earned here? Perhaps they'll wait and see and go any other time?

    I don't know!

Thank you for the clarification. FWIW, I'm clarifying I'm glad we have options elsewhere should we need or want them.....

We were looking to live our retirement in Spain. I did a lot of careful research and planning. It certainly looked doable. The euro had floated around 1.4 to the pound for ages and the one thing I didn`t factor in was the pounds collapse.

Just wait until they are back on pesetas again

they all seem to be wanting to buy a house so that shows quite a bit of commitment to the UK...

you may say that they want to buy a house in the UK and one abroad - i don't think that would be the case. they struggle to want to afford one in the UK so they won't be affording a 2nd one.

They say they are buying here, some of them.....who knows? My policy remains, as it always has been to walk a line between taking everything here writ at face value, and also with a pinch of salt,. A difficult contradiction!

What do retirees have to offer to be accepted in Aus? I thought immigration was restricted to employment viable under 45's.

They can get a retirement Visa, which doesn't give residency and is renewable every 2 years.

To qualify you have to have a huge amount of cash (£300k+ I beleive). There are restrictions on where you can buy a house, you have to have a new build but only in certain areas. They're basically using retirees to build new houses in lesser poplulated areas.

My parents have been out there for 5 years on one of these visas but are coming back next month. As posted above, the UK pension, even my Mum's final salary, goes nowhere, the cost of living is very high over there if you aren't earning local salaries.
