Any candle makers here? Need a few tips!

I've been trying to make some pillar candles but despite my best attempts the top of them look like a mountain range despite topping them up as they cool.
The latest one has just developed a chasm as deep as Cheddar Gorge despite being pretty cool and I've just topped it up for the third time
What am I doing wrong and how on earth do you get a nice finish on the top? I do have a decent mould and the bottom and sides look great.

The wax tends to shrink you will need to keep topping it up with melted wax.
Once you have taken it out of the mould you can trim the base with a sharp knife. Shave little bits off at a time.
