Just found a site offering free knitting & crochet patterns. Not one I have seen before, but found it on the back of a crochet magazine in WHSmiths. It is american, so needles and instructions would need converting. Lots of great patterns! Pretty good find for a Valentines's Day!!

i've just finish a crochet shawl from that website! the best place i have found so far is ravelry.com - it's a user content website - there's loads and loads of projects - free and paid for (but you can put 'free:yes' in the search and it only looks for the free ones) - there's links to patterns from websites like redheart or lionbrand but also patterns designed by ravelry members and most of them are pretty amazing!0

Thank you! Have browsed through and there are some lovely patterns there.
Bookmarked for future reference!

I've looked at ravelry.com before, but I have to admit to browsing these sites and have never actually made anything from them yet. Did you find the pattern for the shawl on ravelry.com as I can't find anything on there from redheart?0

yes, i found it on ravelry, it's this one wrap with slits
it says it's been published on redheart website, but the link for the pattern is for coatsandclark website - you can download a pdf (that's what i did).
i have not yet found a place in the uk (online) that would stock red heart yarn though, which is a shame, it's quite cheap and they do 100% acrylic worsted yarn (i'm a very itchy person and can't have wool!).
i have found a cheap wool shop - they do charge quite a lot for postage (i guess that's expected with wool being rather bulky and heavy) but i find it still works out cheaper.
i live on the isle of man and we have 2 wool shops, but neither sells worsted weight acrylic.0 -

I though worsted was the US version of UK double knitting.
unfortunately, it is not, even though that'd be awesome. dk is the equivalent of american light worsted yarn - it's no biggie if you're making something like a scarf (and you can always doublestrand a dk to make it a bit more chunky), but because majority of american patterns require worsted (aran's near enough but i still find it a bit thin) yarn, if you're making something that needs accurate measurements, like a cardigan, it's a major pain.
even the wrap i linked above, because it had slits, i had to work out how far up the slits go and how big they need to be because the yarn wasn't as thick as the red heart one. i still got it wrong - the slits needed to be slightly bigger so it doesn't look quite right, i'll just get a shawl pin and put it through the slits.
there are some uk patterns out there - most made out of dk - vast majority of the free patterns online is american.0 -
Fellow crotcheters may want to check out free crotchet .com it's an American site and you do have to register... but has some interesting stuff.0

you can also find free contemporary patterns at knitty.com. They add new ones every 3 months or so.0
