Is it possible to us the freedom of information act against finance companies to gain information such as complaints received, complaints upheld and compensation paid etc?

No. The FOI Act only applies to public authorities/organisations or companies that are wholly owned by them.

So maybe you can use the Act to ask for info from the OFT or Financial Ombudsman's office about how many complaints were made about that company.0
