There are worse things that you could be outed for!

I hate pressure cookers (nearly blew the place up about 25 years ago when I was au-pairing in Germany!) and already own a slow cooker and steamer.
I'm just too mean to buy a cooker for the new place!! Am I right in thinking you don't like the remouska?

I have had mine for over a year and although I don't use it daily I do find that for something like a jacket spud or pizza it is great.
I also make toad in the hole in it and use it to kick start dough in this weather.

I have also had success with lasagna ( which for one or two people can be a pain in the big oven) and pasta bake.

Did you ever try it for pasta or rice? The ads do state that they can be used for boiling........but Slinky Minky thinks they are not so good for that?
Sorry no, as they're cooked really quickly on the stove. I would think that providing you warmed the glass bowl first, then added boiling water from the kettle, I should think rice/pasta would cook OK in there, though.
I suspect you'd need to stir it occasionally, as the direct heat will dry out whatever pasta/rice is floating on the top. But other than that, I can't see it being a problem :)
  • You are right I am not keen on the Remoska. It cooks a whole chicken really nicely but takes ages, much longer than a normal oven. If you read the huuuge Remoska thread some folks have cooked up some lovely meals in theirs, but tbh I haven`t tried that hard with mine as I just don`t want to wait that long for dinner to be ready.

As for the pressure cookers, modern ones are now very safe indeed and certainly would not explode on you. My Kuhn Rikons are very quiet and produce tasty food very quickly.....soup, rice, stew, curry, risotto....all rustled up in minutes.

I have an old style pressure cooker and thankfully have had no problems ( so far touch wood) I really do think they are the most useful thing in the kitchen, even just mashed potatoes are so much quicker

  • I think it was user error on the pressure cooker! I was only 18 and they didn't have instructions for it! I can still remember what I was cooking the family - sweet and sour pork! Mum saved the day as one of her 'red cross type' parcels arrived from the UK with - guess what - sweet and sour sauce in a packet! Yippee! God, it took aaages to scrub clean!!:(

  • LOL I have killed a few pressure cookers over the years, including once putting one on the hob with no water in it. It seemed to be taking ages to come to pressure, then I noticed a rather pungent smell of burning. Thankfully it didn`t explode but was charred so black inside it couldn`t be saved and the house stank for ages.

It is a shame your experience put you off as they are so handy.

Slinky ( feeling rather embarrassed that this reply has outed the level of excess kitchen gadgetry I possess...)

That's NOTHING! The gadgets in my mum's kitchen could put most retailers to shame! ;)

  • Mine just set on fire.
  • What were you cooking at the time? Was it something that spits out a lot of fat?

Bit scary as I tend to wander back into the lounge while the food cooks.

Out of curiosity, what brand was it?
