Hi there,

I am attempting to make a birthday cake for a friend whom is a transformers fan. This has no relevence to the help I need...

The picture below is of a face I have made.

(sorry for the poor quality)

The trouble I'm having is that the icing has started to crack and look a bit rough where I've fiddled with it whilst its been drying out. I'm just wondering if theres anyway I can glaze it or somehow make it look much smoother/cleaner? Its grey fondant icing on top of a red fondant icing.

Thanks for your help :)

When I've made cakes with my mum once it starts to dry out that's it - no glaze or anything is going to make it look smoother.
Got any grey left to try again or do you not want to?

Trust me even when you think it looks less than best most people can't believe you've made it by hand.

  • when my icing cracked as i tried to move it what i did was get some of the same colour and mash it up with enough water to make a paste then rubbed it over the top to fill in the cracks with my finger, once it dried it didnt really show too much at all..
  • I made one of these for DS last year!
just use a pastry brush and cover it with water and smooth it with a knife when it is damp enough
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
