If money is tight and you think the house will possibly be sold in the future..your mum can ask for the payments be changed from repayment to interest only. These days lenders are a bit reluctant to do so....However considering the sadness attached to your mum's case....this might giver her some relief for the time being....She has the loss of her husband to cope with added to that the financial insecurity, I cannot see any lender not dealing sympathetically....

To be honest the Nationwide which is the building society involved have not been that sympathetic. They can let my mum pay the interest for a temporary period of time but then we have to pay the full amount. They have even charged interest on the 6 month holiday period which we have which means we are even worse off now than we were before.

I even spoke to the chief executive and all he has agreed to do is waive the fee if we want to come out of the fixed rate but then we have to go to another lender but no other lender will touch us as the figures are so high and my mum is 59.

We have no option but to pay and struggle for the next few years. Luckily there are 3 of us so we all have to pull together.

There are not many avenues left to explore really so we just have to try and manage and if it doesn't work then so be it.

We are in Wales by the way.

This is the Welsh shelter housing
Maybe some of the Housing Assoc's have schemes for over 55's, it is worth checking out....
