Career Development Loans

I am getting a bit ahead of myself, but i was wondering if anyone could give me help on career development loans.

I am wanting to become a barrister, which would mean after my law degree i would have to do a years post grad study and then pupillage for a year after that. The fees for the post grad is about £4000. If i were to apply for a CDL could i apply for the max amount to have money for living on, and would i have to pay after the post grad bit or could i delay it until after my pupillage? You do not earn any money during pupillage.

This is a bit in the future but i would like to have some sort of plan in place. Would a CDL even be the best option at all?

I thought pupillage was now to be remunerated? Have a read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pupillage

    In particular:
The Bar Council has decreed that all pupils must be remunerated in the minimum sum of £833 per month, equating to £10,000 per year, which must be made up of (at minimum) an award of £5,000 in the first six and guaranteed earnings of £5,000 in the second six.

I think that that is just for England and Wales. I would be training in Northern Ireland and I don't think that is in place yet.

You need to look at what each bank offers in regards to paying it back. I've just googled the Co-ops terms and conditions and they indicate you have to start paying the loan back 2 months after your course completes.

Edited to say: You should really ask on the Student moneysaving board to get a better response.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Metalgal - Have you looked at the page in this link http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/AdultLearning/FinancialHelpForAdultLearners/CareerDevelopmentLoans/DG_10033237
It explains what a CDL can be used for and who can apply.
Yes you can apply for help with living costs etc on top of course fees.

It also mentions some specific exclusions in relation to law education - not sure if they are relevant to you or not

thnaks for all the help :)

Unfortunately i cant move. I'd love to! The thing is im not a typical carefree student. Im actually married with a child. We have a mortgage and couldn't sell the house and my husband has one of those rare secure jobs. If the economy was a bit better then moving would be a possibility but houses aren't moving and there is no guarantee my husband could get another job.

But But (unless i'm missing something) - you'll be earning plenty after you quilify lol.... why work so hard and restrict yourself to Ireland - the money in Law is anywhere but our Irish neighbours (sorry to say)....

Just a thought that would have made life easier for you and £10k better off.... maybe you should go (midweek) and return home at weekends? Another way around it...
