Question re Credit report

Hiya, not a bankruptcy question as such but my friend has got a copy of his credit report from Experian. He's had someone knocking on the door and presumed it was a bailiff because of a 1k debt he had with HSBC bank years ago (ongoing argument about charges). So he got a copy of his credit report to check. This bank debt isn't on his credit report. He thought the debt was over 6 years and therefore uncollectable. If it isn't on his credit report does that mean that the debt is in fact over 6 years and has been removed???
Also, it was a free report. Not one you pay for. Is this important? Does it make a difference with the amount of information you get regarding defaults?
The only default on there is from Aktiva bank which he doesn't have any clue about and is less than £300.
Many thanks in advance.

The source, not the price of the credit report matters.
Each agency may hold different data, they might have it all or some.
To be sure you need all 3 of your reports, Experian and Equifax are the main two, but call credit is used sometimes as well. Get your £2 statatory report from all 3 to be sure.
If using a 3rd party like http://www.annualcreditreport.co.uk/, these only hold a selection of old information, as such should not be used. Go with atleast Experian and Equifax reports.
As to the report it will only shows details of accounts that are registered to your name and address, if they missed any details off when getting the report like an address it won't be listed. Also if the account relates to an old address and the address has not been updated and is over 6 years ago it might be missing, unlikely but possible.
All because details are missing does not mean a debt is statute barred, statute barred means the debt must not have had payment made or had written confirmation from the debtor acknowledging the debt. Worth noting if there is a CCJ on a debt, the debt cannot go statute barred.
The default is probably Aktiva Kapital, not Aktiva bank. Aktiva Kapital are a debt collection agency. They are likely to have brought an old debt from the original lender like a bank.
The guy at the door, unless you know who it is i can't advise. Bailiffs can only be used if he has a CCJ which would show on any decent credit report, a CCJ involves either losing in court or not showing up for the court hearing when summoned. Otherwise the guy may just be a debt collector, debt collectors have no more rights to be on your property than a postman.
If it was a bailiff they must say so them when they show up, under no circumstances should you ever let a bailiff in, once they are in peacefully they can force entry to remove goods.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

Thank you Dark Convict that is really useful.
I know that the report that he had contains information from his last 3 addresses. So I had hoped that it would contain all of the information. The report is from Experian. So he's going to go and get one from Equifax now.
We did think the HSBC debt was over 6 years. It's difficult to tell though. It certainly doesn't show on his report. Whereas lots of other stuff that he has on the moment is just there as 'satisfactory'. The Aktiva one is the only one on there as a default.
If we can figure out what the Aktiva one is i'm sure he'll pay it if he is liable for it. £200 is neither here nor there really. He pays what he owes. There is just an ongoing issue regarding charges that he refuses to pay. They are not the same debt though.
Many thanks for taking the time to reply.0 -
Wait for Aktiva to get in touch, then send - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=11570893&postcount=2
If people come chasing the SB debt, and there is no CCJ you can try this if you think it is SB - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=11571227#post11571227Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
