Tomato plants can be put in the shade in a trough lined with an old towel. Fill the trough and soak towel at same time. The towel with allow some of the water to be stored and the plants will soak up the water they need.

Garden, you can try the following: Fill a mid sized container with water and bury up to edge to keep cool, positioning container in the middle of plants. Cut large strips of towel and drape towel strips into water to act as a wick, bury the other ends as close to each plant as possible. Again, the towel acts as a wick and the plant can pull the water from the towel by capillary action. Its not fool proof and I advise you cover the container to stop small animals falling in and drowning.

Upturned water-fileld lemonade bottles dug deeply into the ground. Keep the lid on & poke pin holes in the bottle for the bit below ground level if you see what I mean so that you get a very slow drain away. Depends on how long you will be away for but I've done this to cover a week or so in warm-ish weather with success. Might need several bottles to each plant though? (try freecycle!)
