Bad Debt

My friend bought a bungalow app. 8 months ago. It is obvious from the mail she is receiving for the previous tenants who did not leave a forwarding address that they had big debts. She has returned all these letters to the senders with a note of explanation. She has just been refused a credit card and is wondering if these debts could be showing against her address. Does anyone have an answer please

Ask your friend to obtain a copy of her credit file from Experian and maybe Equifax. It could well be that there's another reason she was refused

Her credit file might also hold a clue as to the previous tenant's undesirable acts, if any. When I ordered a copy of my file I was surprised to find that it contained the name of someone I had never heard of before. Apparently that person had tried to obtain a loan fraudulently and happened to be someone who had either lived there before me or more likely after me. That person's loan had been refused. I suspect they had tried to use my name but I don't know for sure.

I have to add though that this did not affect my getting a loan or credit cards as I have never been refused one, although each time I applied for credit the lender asked me to provide proof of address before granting the facility.

Experian no longer gives out details of others at the same address. There was a time where you would get the histories of all people who have lived at the address, but not anymore
