How to ripen plum?

Any ideas on how to ripen plums.
Leaving them sitting in the kitchen just seems to make the skins go leathery & the inner part soft & tasteless.

If I need to ripen fruit I put bananas next to them, this speeds up the process.

The best way to have ripe plums, is to buy them in season, late summer in the UK If you're buying those huge American plums, they';ll never ripen or become tasty befor they go rotten, sorry

i second that, once a soft fruit like a plum is taken off the tree it wont get any sweeter, all that happens is it softens as it starts to rot... id just stew them up with some sugar...
