Read it ? I'm old enough to have eaten it! And it made for a very miserable life indeed.

Actually, I think it was a discussion about the Ration Book Diet, or some related topic that was the first one I got involved with on here all those years ago (well, 3) when I first found MSE.

    Hi razra,

There are some mentions of the Ration Book Diet on these threads:

    The Ration Book Diet

    WWII cookery books

    WWII Rations

Book on World War Rationing ?

I'll merge your thread with the other one on The Ration Book Diet some time tomorrow to keep all the replies together.

I guess from a youngies point of view all I ever hear about the rationing is the odd bits on tv etc which always make it sound really good, I dread to think how peeps would cope nowadays if they had to go back to rationing

I was kinda hoping the book may show me recipes that used very basic ingrediants or how to use leftovers etc but it just seemed to be more like a history book if that makes sense

I was born a few years before rationing ended, and errata is right; it wasn't a pleasant time. I'm still amazed at the luxury available in the shops today compared to then.

Leftovers? When the weekly ration per person was 4 ounces of this and 2 ounces of that, there weren't any. Except for snoek - which hardly anyone ate because it was truly disgusting and even dogs and cats wouldn't touch it.

I'm very interested in 1940s Domestic Life, and have for some years collected original books from the time (re: cooking) and added to this more modern books about Wartime Cooking. I borrowed The Ration Book Diet, and for various reasons, really didn't like it as much as other books I've got/read. I'ts a shame, as I like Mike Brown's work usually ( I seem to remember he co-wrote the R.B.D.) Its only my own opinion, but I think there are better books around, it depends what you originally wanted from it.
