I got a Breadmaker

Hi everyone,

haven't posted over here for a while but after you were all so helpful with ideas when I got my slowcooker (which I still LOVE btw :D ) I thought it might be a good idea to ask you all for advice on my newest purchase.

I bought myself a breadmaker as early Christmas present (lol I know it's VERY early but it was a bargain at just £18.80) after someone on the grabbit board posted about the Morphy Richards sale on their website.

Amway it arrived today, and in the recipe book that came with it it says to use dried milk powder and sunflour oil, elsewhere in the book it does also say that you can substitute the oil for butter or margarine and the dried milk powder for milk/water. So I was just wondering does it make a difference if you do substitute or are you best sticking to what they suggest? Or is it just down to personal taste and something I will have to work out for my self  :rotfl:

I have a Morphy Richards and to be honest every time I have deviated from the recipe it's been a complete disaster. When I stick to their recipe exactly I don't have a problem.

Have you ever tried making cakes in it Moggins?

I haven't got the flour I need to make bread yet, but I am itching to use it so was considering making a maderia cake just so I can give it a go LOL

If you don't want to use milk powder you can substitute the water in recipe for either all milk or half water and half milk.

Although powdered mlik is very useful to have around especially for making a white sauce.

I didn't have all the stuff in the recipe book so I improvised on a few things... I also got mixed up on the ingredients, kept looking at the next recipe down on the list so end up only putting half a tsp of yeast in rather than a full one. oh and forgot to set the bread to a 1lb loaf rather than the default 1 1/2lb loaf setting. The result???

Surprisingly ok LOL DD and I ate over half the loaf between us and enjoyed it!!!! Now that might be because the smell of it baking made us so hungry we would have eaten a scabby horse but if nothing else I will be interested to see how it turns out when I am using all the correct ingredients (in the right amounts) and set it to the right time ;)

I tend to use olive oil and only really make dough so I can make bread rolls in half the time as a loaf.

I don't have a MR breadmachine, (mine is an el cheapo from Wilko's) but, I make cakes in mine and they come out rather well, even if I do say so myself  Have a go! You'll soon be making your own bread, cakes, pizza's, doughnuts, Chelsea Buns *oooh, my mouth is watering now* :o

After I've tried making another loaf, my next task will be that Madeira cake ;)

Then after that I might be really brave and try fruit cake, I've never ever been able to make a fruit cake successfully so fingers crossed :D

In my bredmaker I use solid white veg fat instead of butter (bit rich) or oil(tends to make my bread cakey). It works really well in my experience.

As for cakes, I bought my husband a breadmaker cook book a few months ago from the book people from which he makes the MOST scrummy sticky gingerbread from start to finish in the breadmaker pan.

yummyyyyyyyy now that's one recipe I will have to look out for. My stepgran used to make a gorgeous sticky gingerbread for us every time we came to visit, we used to help her but being a kid at the time I never took any notice of the recipe. It's too late to ask her now, she had a stroke a couple of years ago and can't talk or write anymore :(

I'd like to start making my own bread but am not sure what mark/style of breadmaker to buy - any recommendations?
