Don't become mortgage free - keep some money in premium bonds - wow there's financial advice for you. Shush don't tell everyone - I think there might be something in this!
Of course you don't go mortgage free and leave yourself with no savings especially if you clearly don't have surplus income and are going to need to fund a shortfall (I'm assuming that the need to consolidate debts comes from not having enough ongoing income to meet spending).Adventure before Dementia!0
