Hi,
I have sent my letters off last week asking for time etc and that I will send my payment proposal to them within 28 days. However, Mercers (a Barclaycard debt) have sent a letter saying they are going to send debt collectors to my door.
What should I do about this? It sounds to me like they have not acknowledged my letter.

first thing is dont panic, this is a common scare tactic as it works most times.
debt collectors have the same rights as your paper boy when it comes too your assets ie NONE,
just remember these 3 things
they DO NOT have any rights to your property
you DO NOT have to talk to them
they DO have to leave your property when asked
IF (and this is a if) they do turn up they will try and scare you into letting them into your house usually with comments about you dont want your neighborghs to hear about your business do you and those types of comments. DO NOT let them in! politly ask them to leave your property and if they do not you will call the police (which you can do)
quick edit have you checked the dates on the letters, could they have passed each other in the post? even if not it could be a time lag between them receiveing you letter and htem actually putting anything on yoru account about itDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
I didnt think of checking the dates. That is a good idea, it very well could be the case.
I thought they had those rights, so shows what I know.
They keep threatening me with my credit being affected, I dont know how it could get any worse so thats a no go, and as for the neighbour thing, well they can know if they want, they aready do because they are my friends.
Plus, im never in! I am always at work. At least the 15-20 calls a day has died down!0 -
Hi braken - you could send the third letter in this post http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=26867957&postcount=15
it tells them they must not visit you. If they turn up tell them to leave. If they are in anyway difficult or won't leave call the policeA smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

well thats also a interesting point, this is also a threat which works a lot because for some reason people have this fear about having a bad credit rating, even those who have ended up having massive problems with their debt, for some people it never seems to sink in that having a good credit rating is what got them in the debt troubles in the first place
for the calls have you sent them the 'only contact me by letter' template which is somewhere around this site?Drop a brand challenge

I have sent them the only contact me by letter ... letter. Lol.
I am just so worried about this, but I am trying to get it sorted. A self-managed DMP is just not easy when I am work all day too. :-S.0 -
Is there a reason you are doing a self-managed dmp bracken? did you get advice from one of the free organisations? is it that your debt is not sufficently large for them to do it for you?A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0

Thats it Tixy, it is not large enough for anyone to deal with, PayPlan told me to do it myself as did CCCS. So I am trying my best, but getting scared now.0

Mercers are Barclaycard debt collectors that is all. They cant threaten anyone. They are just bullies. Scaring people is easy for them hard for you. BUT stand firm and be positive. At the least you ARE doing something about it. It is also nothing personal to them. They dont know you and are just doing a job - a horrible one at that. I am certainly not sticking up for them, but if you are forewarned then you have that on your side. Noone in your house, no phone calls, no taking of your possessions. Simples0

That is what my mum said too. They are just trying to throw their weight around. I have an RDO tomorrow so I am going to call them. I can sense they are going to get the business end of a hissy fit! :-D0
